James Meismer
Benson- James H. Meismer, 72, of Benson, IL, passed away Saturday June 7, 2014 at 1:30 am at the Apostolic Christian Home of Roanoke, after a courageous battle against brain cancer.
James was born on August 27, 1941 in Ft. Wayne, IN to Lewie and Virginia Overton Meismer. He married Sandra Meinhold on November 4, 1967 in Roanoke, IL.
He leaves behind his wife Sandra; their two daughters, Leanna (Mark) Barnard of Champaign, IL and Holly (Darrick) Knapp of Benson; his two grandsons, Cole and Cy Knapp who were his pride and joy; one brother, Lewie Lynn Meismer of Peoria; two sisters, Collette (Bill) Colburn of Naples, FL and Vicki (Roger) Rocke of Peoria.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
An Air Force veteran, Jim honorably served his country. He was a member of the Benson American Legion Post #454 where he had served as commander.
Jim worked for Caterpillar for 31 years, retiring in 1998. He then worked for Craig Wright and Associates in Metamora for 10 years.
As God planned, Jim passed from his earthly life a faithful, loving husband, father, and grandfather. He loved being outdoors in God's creation. He was an avid hunter and he loved to fish and hunt for mushrooms. He also enjoyed wood carving and hand carved many ducks and birds. He will be remembered as a great story teller and one who had a very helping heart.
Jim was a faithful member of St. John Catholic Church in Benson where funeral mass will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday June 11. Fr. Paul Meismer will officiate. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4-7 pm at the Knapp-Johnson-Harris Funeral Home in Roanoke and from 10-11 am on Wednesday prior to the services at the church. Burial with military rites will be at Clayton Township Cemetery in Benson.
