Roanoke - Roger J. "Speed" Wilson, 81, of Roanoke, passed away at 9:11 am on Sunday January 29, 2017 at the Apostolic Christian Home of Roanoke.
He was born in Greene Township, Illinois on February 19, 1935 to William and Grace Poland Wilson. He married Hughlette Edwina Mulkey on September 8, 1957 in Denison, TX. She passed away on August 8, 2008.
Surviving is one son, Kirk Wilson of King George, VA; one grandson, Tucker Wilson of King George, VA; and two granddaughters, Shelby Wilson of Richmond, VA and Cicely Wilson of King George, VA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Kevin and Karl Wilson; one brother, Frank Wilson; and two sisters, Rosemary Sparks and Wilma Kiddy.
An Illinois National Guard Veteran, Speed completed the armory mechanics program. He was a past member of the Roanoke American Legion.
Early in his career, he worked for the Ford dealership in town and later the Chrysler dealership before starting his own business, Speed's Autobody which he ran for over 20 years.
Speed was member of the Eureka Church of Christ. He had a passion for music and enjoyed singing. He loved working on cars and having coffee in the local diner. He had a special love and appreciation for his hometown and all of its residents and he will be missed by those who knew him.
Funeral services will be held at 10am on Wednesday February 1st at Knapp-Johnson-Harris Funeral Home in Roanoke. Gary Cline will officiate. Visitation will be 5-7pm on Tuesday and from 9-9:45 on Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Roanoke Township Cemetery.
