Roanoke - Verna R. Hodel, 93, of Roanoke, passed away at 2:10 pm on Saturday, August 5, 2017 at the Apostolic Christian Home of Roanoke.
She was born on October 26, 1923 in Tremont, IL to Dan and Matilda Dreyer Sauder. She married Stanley J. Hodel on September 9, 1945 in Roanoke, IL. He passed away on June 22, 2015.
Also surviving are three sons, Dave (Maxine) Hodel of Bloomington; John (Linda) Hodel; Phil (Lynne) Hodel both of Roanoke; two daughters, Barb (Mike) Meece of Normal; Becky (Mark) Grimm of Morton; three sisters, Jean Kupferschmid of Eureka; Mary Ann Beer of Milford; Lois (Duane) Steffen of Congerville; 11 grandchildren; and 29 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Wilma Sauder, one brother, William Sauder, and one granddaughter, Anna Hodel.
Verna had a passion for education and served as a teacher aid for Sowers Elementary School in Roanoke for many years. She also had worked as the activities director of the Apostolic Christian Home of Roanoke.
Verna was a member of the Apostolic Christian Church and attended church in Roanoke, Bloomington, and Ft. Myers, FL during her life.
She enjoyed crafting, a talent that helped to start the Roanoke Apostolic Christian Nursing Home benefit many years ago. She loved serving others, and especially volunteering with her husband at Midwest Food Bank in Bloomington.
She enjoyed her retirement years in Florida with Stan and loved to travel and spend time with family and friends. Her love and family and her faith were the most important things to Verna..
Funeral services will be held at 10 am on Tuesday August 8th at the Roanoke Apostolic Christian Church. Church ministers will officiate. Visitation will be held from 4-7 pm on Monday at Knapp-Johnson-Harris Funeral Home in Roanoke and from 9-9:45 am on Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
